Reporter gene assays are used to study the expression of eukaryotic genes. In dual reporter gene assays cells are transfected with two vectors, the first containing an experimental reporter gene coupled to a regulated promoter of interest, and the second containing a control reporter gene coupled to constitutive promoter. Normalising the activity of the experimental reporter to the control reporter minimises experimental variability.
