New Kromasil SFC columns support green technology drive in laboratories

Mar 25 2015

Supercritical fluid Chromatography (SFC) has been used by scientists in laboratories and manufacturing facilities for several decades. Historically, the interest in SFC has been for chiral applications, natural product separations and isolation of key active ingredients.  Nowadays, SFC is also used for achiral separations and purifications.

Laboratory personnel interest in the SFC technique is due to the fact that SFC uses supercritical carbon dioxide as the major mobile phase component, therefore laboratory solvent purchasing costs can be significantly reduced compared to normal and reversed phase chromatography.  Accordingly, as most of the eluent is carbon dioxide, disposal costs are minimised when switching to SFC. Due to the physics involved, SFC is also seen as a tool for quick sample turnaround, and when moving to drug development and production, the reduced time of solvent evaporation increases the overall productivity.

With the recent advances of SFC instrumentation at the bench top level, key barriers have been lowered for scientists to adopt the technique in the laboratory. These trends combined with the potential capabilities of SFC for faster analysis and effective separations, are resulting in a new level of interest in SFC. The new Kromasil SFC family of columns is tailor-made for research and development as well as for routine analysis.

These new SFC columns are based on the trusted, high performance, state-of-the-art spherical Kromasil silica, giving peace of mind to those working in the laboratory. Designed for fast separations based on Kromasil silica 2.5 µm particles, the new range of Kromasil SFC columns offer the scientist several options to analyse incoming samples.  Available in a quartet of phases, including bare silica as well as cyano, diol, and 2-ethylpyridine chemistries, users able to separate and analyse a wide range of substances, from non-polar to strongly polar compounds.

Endorsed by more than 25 years of stationary phase manufacturing and packing expertise, Kromasil continues to be the family of performance products delivered to customers in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, clinical and environmental industries.
