Have We Discovered an Earth-Like Exoplanet?

The search for extra-terrestrial life is something that never fails to excite people. Well Proxima B might just be the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for. The exoplanet in a nearby solar system, is thought to be habitable. So where is it? What is it? And could we even get there one day? Read on to find out.
Planetary discovery
Proxima Centauri is a low-mass star about an eighth the size of the Sun. It’s over four light-years away, but it’s actually the centre of the nearest solar system to our own. It’s also the location of the new exoplanet discovery – Proxima b. By analysing the movements of Proxima Centauri in response to the perceived gravitational pull of this exoplanet, scientists have been able to estimate the physical properties of the planet:
- It orbits Proxima Centauri every 11.2 days.
- The orbital distance is just 4.7 million miles. Compared to the Earth’s 584 million-mile orbit of the sun, it’s pretty short.
- Proxima b has a temperature that allows liquid water to exist.
- Because of tidal locking, one side of Proxima b is always dark
- Like the earth, it has a rocky surface
The main discovery in these characteristics is the potential for water. Water means life. The temperatures of other planets in our solar system and those orbiting other stars often prevent the possibility of liquid water. However, with Proxima b, there is a real possibility that the planet could be home to the magical liquid.
Hugely significant
Dr Guillem Anglada-Escudé said that the discovery was hugely significant to those involved. “Many exoplanets have been found and many more will be found, but searching for the closest potential Earth-analogue and succeeding has been the experience of a lifetime for all of us. Many people’s stories and efforts have converged on this discovery. The result is also a tribute to all of them” explained the senior researcher from London’s Queen Mary University.
The importance of temperature
Whether it’s planetary habitability or medical research, temperature is of huge importance. Different chemical elements have different boiling points and freezing points.
