Meetings Update: the Royal Microscopical Society

Mar 05 2015

Botanical Microscopy Meeting – 20 – 23 April 2015, University of Exeter

This popular, niche meeting is the latest in the long-running series and consists of both a specialist scientific programme and an exhibition with a bustling poster session on top, allowing it to encompass all aspects of bioimaging relating to plant cell biology. Talks in the programme cover both the theoretical and practical developments in the field and are given by celebrated, knowledgeable speakers and a Special Guest Lecture will be given at the Dinner for delegates by Professor Rob Kesseler. This meeting provides a rare chance to network and make new contacts with peers in this area amongst the beautiful backdrop of the vast gardens of the University of Exeter. An opportunity to extend your visit with a trip to the Eden Project is also available upon registration to the meeting.

Registration for the Microscience Microscopy Congress is now open! The Congress, incorporating the EMAG, Frontiers in Bioimaging and SPM Meetings hosts six daily parallel sessions spanning the life and physical sciences across various microscopy techniques and disciplines. It also includes Europe’s largest microscopy and imaging exhibition in 2015 boasting plenty of free training opportunities every day for visitors in industry and academia with a number of free workshops and seminars to attend as well as The Learning Zone, a hands on area provided by the RMS. Registration rates for the conference start at just £25 for students and exhibition registration is free! Travel bursaries will be available from the RMS on a first come first served basis to help both conference delegates and exhibition visitors to attend this huge event.

LM, Confocal and Grain Courses, 13 – 17 July 2015, University of York

RMS Training Courses are well regarded amongst the microscopy community and in July, the Society run 3 at the University of York in July covering different areas. The Light Microscopy Summer School is a 3 day residential course covering the basics in both the theory and practical elements of using a light microscope. Getting the Most from your Confocal Course, allows participants to develop their confocal microscopy background plus try out FRAP, FRET & spectral unmixing. The Quantitative Analysis of Grain Size Course is ideal for materials scientists in research or quality control and aims to help develop an appreciation of selecting the correct method for the determination of grain size in engineering materials.

New Honorary Fellows

The Royal Microscopical Society has added to its prestigious list of Honorary Fellows of the Society. The list aims to represent the most eminent scientists in the field of microscopy in the present day, with only 65 Honorary Fellows able to be designated at once. The newest additions for 2015 are:

Professor Barbara Bain, St Mary's Hospital Campus

Professor Dirk van Dyck, University of Antwerp

Dr Mike Ormerod

Professor Leonore Herzenberg, Stanford University School of Medicine

Professor Peter Hepler, University of Massachusetts

Dr Max Haider, CEOS GmbH

As part of the 175th anniversary of the Royal Microscopical Society last year, a special video was commissioned designed to give an overview of the Society to newcomers and to highlight the current and future projects keeping them truly at the forefront of microscopy. This video, filmed partly at mmc2014, can now be viewed at www.rms.org.uk/about-the-rms . For details of courses visit www.rms.org.uk
