All-Inclusive Crystallisation Plate Imager and Storage Unit for Oxygen-sensitive Proteins

One of the nation’s largest core facilities for high-throughput protein expression, purification, crystallisation and structure determination of oxygen-sensitive proteins is now on-line at Albert Einstein, Bronx NY, with plate storage, imaging and screening provided by Formulatrix.

To help in these efforts Albert Einstein College of Medicine in association with the New York Structural Genomics Research Consortium (NYSGRC) has announced the installation and initial commissioning of its’ anaerobic chamber (glove box) specifically designed for the large-scale expression, purification, crystallisation and structure determination of oxygen-sensitive proteins. Researchers at Einstein have assembled a unique instrumentation system, including approximately 50 linear feet of glove box space (as seen in the pictures below).  One of the key technologies employed in this anaerobic chamber is a Formulatrix Rock Imager 1000, an all-inclusive crystallisation plate imager and storage unit.

In addition to high resolution structural applications, the materials arising from these efforts (verified expression clones and purified proteins) will also support a wide range of functional, mechanistic and systems biology studies, and will be freely distributed.

The NYSGRC actively solicits proposals from the community to process targets of interest for users and invites users to visit NYSGRC (http://www.nysgrc.org) in order to directly utilise this system and more fully integrate with the PSI:Biology Network (http://sbkb.org).
