Aug 19 2019

British IR and FTIR sample handling accessories supplier, Specac, held the official opening of their brand new, state-of-the-art headquarters, The Science & Innovation Centre, on 23 July 2019. Over 100 staff, partners, press and customers attended the event which featured a ribbon cutting ceremony, live demonstrations, entertainment and a tour of the new facilities.

A leading UK manufacturer, Specac Ltd is based in Orpington, Kent, and has been in business since 1971. They lead the field in the design and manufacture of accessories for spectrometers used in science and industry. In particular, they supply sample-analysis accessories, high-specification equipment using mirrors and crystal materials to direct infrared light. They sell to 70 countries across five continents, including the United States, China, Germany, Singapore and Japan. In 2018 Specac was recognised with the prestigious Queen’s Award for International Trade.

The celebrations opened with a champagne reception for the ribbon cutting. David Smith, Specac's Managing Director, addressed the crowd, alongside Stephen Phipson CBE, Make UK's CEO, and officially opened the cutting-edge facility for business.

With up-to-the-date innovation, visitors were given the opportunity to see the Specac 3D printer in action and try out a prototype of the Specac virtual reality experience, the 'Specac Virtual Lab'. A tour of the impressive, new facilities followed this giving visitors the chance to explore a high tech analysis setting, used to trial testing methods and analyse samples for customers within the new ‘Demo Lab’. Various instruments, from the new Apex XRF Die, Atmos FTIR gas cell, Quest ATR and Pearl liquid cell were demonstrated. At all times, staff were available to discuss the equipment and techniques employed in the various laboratories used to create world-leading equipment such as the Pearl liquid cell and Atlas hydraulic presses.

Speaking about the Science & innovation Centre, David Smith said: “The move into these brand new, purpose built premises is very exciting for us all. It increases our production capacity as well as much needed, modern, office space. We will also be able to welcome visitors to our Newton Demonstration Lab. We are a very ambitious business, and we want to continue to help make the world a healthier and safer place. We believe that our new home will make anything possible.”

Hazel Hall, Marketing Manager for Specac commented: “The Science and Innovation Centre is a new and inspiring opportunity for Specac to showcase itself to the scientific world with our wonderful facilities. We are planning a schedule of training and educational courses in the demonstration lab as well as having the capability to use it as a testing establishment. Do come and see us!”
