The University of Basel in Switzerland provided the venue for Endress and Hauser’s ‘Innovators Meeting 2009’, where the company honoured over 200 of its inventors celebrating their new patents which were applied for during last year.

This was the highest number of applications, well above last year’s record. "The ’Innovators’ Meeting’ is designed to show our appreciation of our inventors,” stressed Klaus Endress, CEO of the Endress+Hauser Group. "Innovations and patents are the foundations of our company’s success in the future.”

The highlight of the event was the announcement of the ’Patent Rights Incentive Awards’. This year’s prize awards of 10,000 Euro each went to two exceptional patents in sensor engineering.

Klaus Endress and his deputy Michael Ziesemer jointly handed over the award certificates and the trophies to Dr Wolfgang Drahm and Dr Alfred Rieder of Endress+Hauser Flowtec for their improvement to the vibration system in single tube Coriolis mass flow meters. “This invention has optimised the mechanics of the vibration system – in other words, of the vibrating measuring tube – to such an extent that it is influenced far less by process vibrations.

This means that flow can now be measured even more accurately and with greater reliability,” Michael Ziesemer said. The second award went to Dr Sergej Lopatin and Helmut Pfeiffer of Endress+Hauser Maulburg for improvement to a vibration system with single rod level limit switches.

“Instead of a single vibration rod, we use three vibration elements. Packed in a tube, they are now more capable of compensating powerful process vibrations like those found when filling containers with coarse-grained sand. This invention makes measurements even more reliable”, added Michael Ziesemer.
