Agreement Allows Greater Exploration of Regenerative Medicine

Mar 31 2010

“Improving the quality of life of people the world over — that´s what drives me in all my work," said Professor Samuel Stupp, who visited Göteborg recently to sign a new cooperative agreement between the University of Göteborg, Sweden and America´s renowned Northwestern University of Chicago. It was regarded as a very prominent visit because Professor Stupp, Director of the Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine (IBNAM), has successfully made paralysed mice walk again.

Reversal and prevention of paralysis through spinal cord regeneration, curing Parkinson´s and Alzheimer´s diseases, universal repair of all bone fractures and production of new cartilage are only some of the areas which Professor Stupp and his research team are looking into by using nanotechnology and regenerative medicine. The new agreement will allow “possibilities to explore, for example, novel, supramolecular, self-assembled materials in patient-centred research on osseointegration and neuroregeneration. Scientists and graduate students will benefit greatly by the cooperation and exchange made possible by this agreement," said Professor Peter Thomsen, Director of BIOMATCELL VINN Excellence Center of Biomaterials and Cell Therapy, at Göteborg University.

During his visit Professor Stupp, presented a lecture on the subject “Nanotechnology Meets Regenerative Medicine”. Further details at www.goteborgbio.se
