Jun 06 2023
Follow correct food safety practices and regulations to avoid health risks
Fresh fish should have a mild odor and a bright, clear appearance. If the fish smells overly strong or has a cloudy, discolored appearance, it may be contaminated with Formaldehyde.
It is illegal to use formaldehyde in the fish industry in many countries due to the health risks. Consuming fish that has been contaminated with formaldehyde can cause a range of health problems, including irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, gastrointestinal problems, and even cancer. It is important to avoid fish that may have been treated with formaldehyde.
This toxic and carcinogenic substance is commonly used as a preservative in some countries to prevent fish from spoiling during transport and storage. Employed to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that can cause fish to spoil, when used improperly or in excessive amounts, it can result in unsafe levels in the fish.
You can test for formaldehyde fish using our Reflectroquant® handheld instrument and test strips. Keep us safe!
