Keynote speakers Professor Marcus Du Sautoy and Dr Ben Goldacre will join this year’s Science World event on Thursday 10th October at the prestigious Old Trafford venue The Point.  Science World – the Fisher Scientific Laboratory Experience – is a free consumer show which will allow industry professionals to network and view an extensive showcase of laboratory products and demonstrations. Over the past 15 years, the event has hosted some of the most evocative scientists in recent history; Professor Richard Dawkins, Professor Brian Cox and Professor Robert Winston are amongst the Science World alumni and have each provided insight and inspiration to thousands of delegates.

This year’s speakers will be no exception; Ben Goldacre is best known for bestsellers ‘Bad Science’ and ‘Bad Pharma’ in which he unpicks scientific claims made by scaremongering journalists, government reports, PR companies and quacks and puts the  600 billion dollar global pharmaceutical industry under the microscope. Also well known for his series of groundbreaking TED talks, at Science World 2013 Ben will share his views on the process of new drug approval. He will show how flaws in the planning, conduct and publication of studies conducted by the pharmaceutical industry can actually harm the life of patients. Over the last few years, several requirements have been implemented with the good intention to increase the transparency and reduction of publication bias. Ben will talk about the effectiveness of these changes. He will share his ideas on what additional necessary changes need to be implemented in the drug approval process. In his speech he will cover all involved parties: the patients, pharmaceutical drug companies, regulatory bodies and payers.

Marcus Du Sautoy is equally revered as the Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. His books include ‘The Music of the Primes’ and ‘Finding Moonshine: a mathematician’s journey through symmetry’ and his recent BBC2 series ‘The Code’ met with critical acclaim. Currently appearing in the successful television series ‘School of Hard Sums’ with Dara O’Briain, Marcus will present the themes of his latest book ‘The Number Mysteries’ at Science World 2013 and take a closer look at the power of mathematics as a tool to predict the future.
