New report examines mercury levels in microalgae food supplements

08 Oct, 2026

Analytix has released a new Milestone application report examining mercury levels in commercially available Spirulina, Chlorella, Klamath and Fucus supplements amid growing demand for nutrient-rich microalgae products.

Microalgae provide proteins, vitamins and antioxidants, but can absorb contaminants from aquatic environments. Mercury is a particular concern because prolonged exposure may affect the nervous system, making dependable monitoring essential for manufacturers, regulators and consumers.

The study found mercury concentrations ranging from 0.5µg/kg to 18µg/kg. Ocean-derived algae generally contained more mercury than lake-grown samples. Mercury was detected in every product tested, although all results remained below the legal limit.

Using the Milestone Direct Mercury Analyser (DMA), researchers completed each measurement in under seven minutes without sample pre-treatment or chemical additives. This streamlined method reduces preparation time, cost and analytical complexity.

The report recommends responsible consumption and consideration of cumulative daily intake. At the suggested Spirulina serving of four 0.5g tablets, estimated mercury intake was approximately 18ng per day. These findings highlight the importance of routine testing and clear consumer guidance as the microalgae supplement market expands.
