Plasmion – SICRIT Ion Source Technology

12 May, 2025

SICRIT Ion Source Technology for its application as Chemical Imaging Solution for any LC-MS System

The SICRIT® ion source enables a novel, flexible approach to chemical imaging using conventional LC-MS systems. This innovation allows users to generate high-resolution mass spectrometry images—down to 1 µm pixel size—without the need for vacuum conditions, complex sample preparation, or dedicated instruments.

By integrating SICRIT with a laser ablation system, users can perform spatially resolved molecular analysis on a wide range of samples, including biological tissues and solid surfaces. Unlike traditional MS imaging methods such as MALDI or TOF-SIMS, the SICRIT-based setup operates under ambient pressure and requires minimal sample preparation. There is no need for matrix application or surface modification—making the method highly accessible and adaptable.

Technical Highlights

- High Resolution: Imaging down to 1 µm pixel size enables detailed spatial insights, even for fine tissue structures.

- Minimal Fragmentation: The cold plasma design of SICRIT ensures gentle ionization, preserving molecular structures.

- Broad Analyte Range: Multiple ionization pathways enable the detection of both polar and non-polar compounds.

- Fast and Efficient: Confined ionization and rapid washout support high-throughput imaging with minimal carryover.

- Plug & Play Integration: The system connects seamlessly to any LC-MS with an atmospheric pressure inlet. Switching between standard and imaging modes takes less than five minutes—without venting the instrument.

Impact

This approach opens up chemical imaging to labs that previously lacked access to vacuum-based imaging systems. It combines spatial resolution, speed, and simplicity, making high-quality molecular imaging achievable for routine applications in life sciences, materials research, and beyond.
