A collaboration between Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies and Steminent Biotherapeutics aims to advance manufacturing processes for mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapies, addressing a key challenge in bringing regenerative medicines from clinical development towards commercial production.
The companies are working together to optimise automated MSC expansion workflows using Terumo BCT’s Quantum Flex™ Automated Cell Expansion System. The approach is designed to improve manufacturing consistency, scalability and process control while reducing reliance on manual procedures.
MSC-based therapies have shown potential across a range of regenerative medicine applications, but large-scale production remains a major hurdle due to the complexity of maintaining quality, reproducibility and efficiency during cell expansion.
Through the collaboration, Terumo BCT will develop a scalable production workflow aligned with Steminent’s late-stage clinical development goals. The resulting process will support Steminent’s continued advancement of its MSC-based therapy programmes and future manufacturing requirements.
“Collaborating with Terumo BCT allows us to strengthen our manufacturing foundation with processes designed for late-stage development and beyond,” said Ling-Mei Wang, Chairperson of Steminent.
The collaboration also reflects growing efforts across the Asia-Pacific region to establish more robust cell and gene therapy manufacturing capabilities, supporting the transition of advanced therapies from research into clinical and commercial applications.
