A Krüss Optronic is one of the oldest family-owned companies within the German optical-instruments industry. It was founded in 1796, when Strasbourg-born Opticus Mechanicus Edmund Gabory moved to Hamburg and opened a workshop for optical instruments. Since then, the company has been handed down from one generation of the Krüss family to the next. In the 7th and 8th generation Martina
Krüss-Leibrock and her daughter Karin Leibrock now manage the company.
This strategy gave a unique opportunity of combining continuity in business with technological progress. A Krüss often came out with leading technologies of the time. The company developed lenses for the first cameras and diascopes as well as specific microscopes for medical and food examinations. At the end of the 19th century the scientist, Hugo Krüss, led the business. He founded the basics of modern photometry and published several books, while the company offered the necessary equipment for his new analysis methods. In order to emphasise today’s wide use of electronics in modern optical analysis, the company name was changed to A Krüss Optronics. At present, the focus lies on highend refractometers, polarimeters, and density meters, as well as classic microscopes and process flame photometers.
Looking towards the future, the family strategy proves more up to date than ever – technical innovations embedded in the long-term thinking of generations. Flexibility combined with stability, or, as the company motto says: Innovation since 1796.
