Xylem Analytics showcased new technology at this year’s virtual Analytica held online in October 2020.

Amongst other technology, Xylem brand Bellingham + Stanley presented a new measurement technology – the DSG Series Density Meters for measuring the specific gravity of solutions.

The measurement of specific gravity is commonplace throughout industry; from raw material testing to multiple instrument experiments within the laboratory’s of food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical and general industrial processes.

The DSG Series comprises two instruments. The DSG40 has a density measurement accuracy to 4 decimal places, whilst the DSG50 offers a higher specification resolving to 5 decimal points (g/cm3). Alternatively, results can be expressed as Brix, % alcohol (w/w or v/v) as well as specific gravity (20/20 or 25/25) with more application specific methods being introduced in 2021.

The new instruments follow the same design philosophy of Bellingham + Stanley’s world renowned RFM refractometers and ADP polarimeters. Simple. Reliable. Precise.

Users new and old will recognise how the simple, bright, 7” colour-coded touchscreen makes reading and configuration simple, even when wearing gloves.  Additionally, users are able to navigate through the instrument’s menu using a USB keyboard and mouse.

Sample application is simply made using a Luer-lock syringe and to avoid erroneous readings caused by entrapped air, an onboard detection system warns users of any possible issues. A window above the detector cell provides for a final check of the sample application to help ensure measurement validity. A powerful Peltier temperature control system within the instrument then quickly stabilises the sample at the desired temperature prior to the reading being taken.

DSG Series density meters also feature an onboard desiccant, tucked away inside the instrument to save precious laboratory bench space. A series of internal humidity detectors not only facilities a prompt for desiccant replacement but also gives users confidence that the air being provided to the oscillating u-tube (as part of the post-reading cleaning and calibration) is reliable. An integral air pump provides for easy cleaning with dry air.

Extensive reporting and security features within the instrument’s user friendly menu ensures auditability and data integrity when choosing to incorporate the instrument into any laboratory operating in accordance with GLP or FDA regulation 21 CFR Part 11.
