Evaporation System for Laboratories

Jul 30 2009

Vacuum distillation with a rotary evaporator is the most commonly used laboratory method for separating and removing a solvent from a reaction mixture. Besides the basic unit, a vacuum source and control is required. For this purpose the rotary evaporator combines the advantages of gentle evaporation with high efficiency, flexibility and an easy setup. The distillation process is normally performed under vacuum, using a vacuum controller. The vacuum and the hysteresis for the distillation are preset and the corresponding pressure depends on the used solvent, the bath and the cooling temperature.

As the inventor of the rotary evaporator, Buchi has decades of experience in single-step vacuum distillations. This know-how and close co-operation with customers has lead to the implementation of new ideas and enhanced features.

The V-850/855 Vacuum Controller is attached at the top of the rotary evaporator and controls the speed of the V-700 Vacuum Pump, providing a precise and hysteresis-free pressure with very low noise emissions. An alternative Vacuum Module, the “EasyVac”, offers a new way to perform automatic distillations based upon vapour pressure detection. From conducting many trials of different evaporation processes the EasyVac Module has been optimised to cover virtually all needs in the lab. Due to its simple operation with only four buttons, even a person without distillation knowledge can easily run the system efficiently and safely. The system can be completed with the B-741 Distillation Chiller. This self-contained recirculating chiller is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly replacement for expensive, constantly running cooling water. The one-button instrument has a fixed temperature of 10°C and is optimally suited to work with a rotary evaporator.
