Pope Scientific wiped film stills are currently offered by Labtex in three basic models with differing evaporative surface sizes, 2” model with a 323cm2 surface area, 4” model with a 1097cm2 surface area and 6”

model with a 2194cm2 surface area.

Model size is based on the internal diameter of the evaporating chamber (column). Still components are typically made from borosilicate glass apart from the drive system (usually 316 stainless steel) and wiper blades (TEFLON or ultra pure high temperature carbon). Other materials are available on special order such as quartz, stainless steel and other metals for the drive.

Pope stills can be configured to efficiently achieve the following different types of separation. Concentration/evaporation - in the case of concentration/evaporation, the desired final product is usually the residue rather than the distillate and water is often the substance removed. Therefore broader cuts can be made to remove the unwanted material as distillate. The efficiency of the basic configuration is improved by larger feed and receiver flasks, external condensers or stainless steel internal condensers and higher heating capacity.

Molecular distillation - in molecular distillation the desired final product is usually the distillate. Pope still bodies are dimensionally designed for more efficient molecular distillation. The condenser is situated inside the evaporator, with its condensing surface sufficiently close to the evaporating surface as to minimise collisions of evaporated molecules on the path from the evaporator to the condenser. Molecular distillation is improved by using high vacuum systems and precise temperature control.
