Polymer Char has developed a compact, robust and fully automated instrument for measuring the bivariate distribution of Polyolefins by TREF fractionation and subsequent GPC analysis of the fractions in a single experiment.

The bivariate distribution is obtained as a 3D plot to describe the Composition–Molar mass interdependence of the sample. The Molar Mass and Composition distributions from the parent sample are also obtained with good precision by recovery and accumulation of the GPC and TREF fractions.

TREF fractions can be taken at any temperatures (including subambient down to -20ºC), being possible to adapt the operation to the sample analysed in order to optimise resolution and analysis time (number of fractions).

Five different samples can be analysed unattended in a fully automated process with no solvent handling, taking about 12 hours analysis time per sample under standard conditions.
