100,000 hours: Diaphragm pumps set new lifetime benchmark

03 Aug, 2026

KNF has demonstrated the long-term reliability of its NMP 850.1.2 diaphragm gas pump, achieving a verified operating lifetime of 100,000 hours under defined test conditions. Equivalent to more than 11 years of continuous operation, the result provides OEMs with confidence in applications where reliability and uninterrupted performance are essential.

The lifetime test was designed to determine how long the pump remained fully operational at a specific operating point. Two sets of five pumps were installed at a KNF testing facility and operated continuously under demanding conditions, including an ambient temperature of 40°C, 40–60% humidity, 0.5 bar overpressure and continuous vibration from neighbouring pumps in the test rig.

Despite these stresses, all pumps continued to operate without maintenance or component replacement after exceeding 100,000 hours. According to KNF, the results demonstrate the durability of its diaphragm pump technology and provide valuable data on long-term performance under controlled operating conditions.

"This achievement is not an isolated result, but a reflection of the high quality and engineering standards we apply to every product," said Fabian Hofstetter, Head of Product Management at KNF Micro AG.

Long service life can help reduce unplanned downtime, maintenance requirements and total cost of ownership in applications where continuous operation is critical. Typical uses include medical devices, analytical and laboratory instrumentation, portable and stationary emissions monitoring, and safety-critical gas detection systems.

The company attributes the pump's performance to its engineering-led development process and comprehensive testing programme. Lifetime testing is carried out alongside detailed production inspections, while every pump undergoes individual testing before leaving the factory. Pre-tested components are also used to help ensure consistent quality, including for customised pump solutions.

KNF says these validation processes enable predictable pump performance, stable long-term operation and reliable integration into customer equipment. For OEMs and system integrators, this can help simplify qualification, reduce service requirements and support dependable operation throughout the lifetime of their devices.
