Circular economy model helps labs track CO₂ savings

Labexchange has launched a sustainability model designed to help laboratories turn equipment reuse into measurable carbon savings for ESG and CSR reporting.

Called LabCycle, the initiative combines certified pre-owned laboratory equipment, a structured trade-in programme and verified CO₂ calculations to support circular economy goals across the sector.

Using a methodology aligned with DIN EN ISO 14067, the system calculates emissions avoided through the reuse of laboratory equipment and records the results in a digital certificate. These figures can then be used in sustainability strategies, Scope 3 assessments and corporate reporting.

Labexchange says the model builds on its long-standing supply of both new and refurbished laboratory equipment, extending product lifecycles while offering laboratories a lower-cost alternative to buying new systems.

Under the scheme, calculated carbon savings are shared equally between the supplier and buyer of the equipment. A LabCycle Credit system has also been introduced, with one credit representing 10 kg of CO₂ equivalent avoided.

The concept was presented at analytica 2026 in Munich, where it attracted strong interest from across the industry. More than 100 LabCycle certificates have already been issued and are being used by customers in ESG and CSR reporting.

The company says discussions with manufacturers and industry partners highlighted growing demand for solutions that combine sustainability targets with measurable commercial value.
