Cutting-edge NGS laboratory opens in Oxford

Feb 08 2024

Azenta Life Sciences is set to inaugurate its cutting-edge GENEWIZ Multiomics and Synthesis Solutions laboratory in Oxford, in March 2024. Renowned as a global leader in R&D genomics services, Azenta is at the forefront, providing superior data quality and unmatched technical support. The lab's opening marks a significant stride in empowering researchers worldwide to accelerate their scientific breakthroughs.

Dr Ginger Zhou, Senior Vice President and General Manager for GENEWIZ Multiomics & Synthesis Solutions, expressed: “The introduction of our genomics lab in Oxford will grant researchers local access to the latest next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, eliminating logistical challenges tied to services located outside the UK.” The lab will use a widespread network of GENEWIZ collection points, streamlining sample submission through convenient courier pick-up. Additionally, the facility will offer complimentary dry ice sample collection via drop boxes in Oxford and Cambridge. Dr.Zhou highlighted the company's acknowledgment of the UK's excellence in genomics research, showcasing its commitment by awarding grants to UK researchers for their upcoming NGS projects.

Lauren Roberts, Research Assistant at Imperial College London and the recipient of the first prize UK grant, expressed gratitude, stating: “This grant will enable me to conduct whole genome sequencing on L. iners isolates, providing a deeper understanding of their role in women's health.”

Dr David Buck, Head of the new Oxford genomics lab, anticipates the grand opening event on 25th April, bringing together Azenta's leadership, representatives from the scientific community, and members of the press. While the official ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for April, the lab will commence receiving and processing customer samples in mid-March.

Dr Buck emphasised: “Our Oxford lab is equipped with the latest cutting-edge NGS platforms, empowering scientists to bring impactful breakthroughs and therapies to market faster. The comprehensive NGS services offered encompass RNA/DNA extraction, library preparation, sequencing, and bioinformatics analysis, supported by experienced PhD-level study managers from project design to delivery.”
