RFM340+ Peltier Refractometer with Enhanced Performance

Jul 27 2010

Leading Refractometer manufacturer Bellingham + Stanley improves thermodynamic performance facilitating improved measurement accuracy for food and beverage applications in both Brix & SG!

For three years since its launch, the RFM300+ Series of Peltier temperature controlled refractometers has been adopted by many leading food and beverage manufacturers as the primary tool for controlling product yield and to assure end-point quality of finished goods.

Following improvement to the thermodynamic control system and measurement algorithms, from June 2010 the RFM340+ version has an increased measurement performance between 0-20°Brix (sucrose w/w) reducing
potential measurement error in the critical range covering finished products such as sodas, fruit juice, grape must, beer, wine and cider. By improving the performance at the low end of the scale, users will be able to trim syrup dilution to the absolute minimum without the risk of breaching manufacturing specifications. The instrument even has the potential to monitor effluent that has very low total dissolved solid content.

Additional to the enhanced performance, an SG scale is now common to the series. This scale may be used to express the relative density of pure sucrose solutions and when used in conjunction with a product offset
from within the METHODS SYSTEM, can express finished beverages as an equivalent SG - just as if it were measured on a density meter! The instrument will display and print both the °Brix and SG and by doing so, contract packers may now use a refractometer in situations where density °Brix or SG is dictated as the method of analysis whilst retaining all the measurement advantages held by a refractometer.

RFM300+ Series instruments still provide the inherent benefits of refractive index analysis including rapid measurement, simplicity of use and the ability to measure pulpy products without being affected by insoluble solids. SMART temperature stability checks also ensure readings are taken only when equilibrium is achieved and up to 700 readings may be stored for recall by way of tabular on-screen menu or PC download.
