New cryoscope enables fast, accurate freezing point testing in milk

10 Mar, 2025

Funke-Gerber has enhanced its renowned CryoStar automatic, a device used for determining the freezing point of milk and detecting water adulteration. This improvement ensures even greater accuracy and reliability, making it ideal for quality control in milk production. The updated CryoStar is designed to operate seamlessly in environments with high room temperatures, up to 40°C, and withstand fluctuations in air pressure, ensuring consistent results regardless of external factors.

Water ingress during milk production, which occurs when milking systems, tanks, and tankers are rinsed, leads to water mixing with the milk. This makes accurate freezing point determination - also known as cryoscopy - a crucial process in detecting unwanted water additives. Funke-Gerber's advancements have focused on precision and speed, addressing the challenges of measuring freezing points at varying ambient conditions. The newly integrated pressure sensor alerts users to significant changes in air pressure that could influence the freezing point measurement, ensuring no deviation in the results.

The CryoStar automatic offers high throughput, thanks to a rotary magazine capable of holding twelve samples. The system processes these samples automatically, with the first result available in just 90 seconds, allowing for a maximum throughput of 40 samples per hour. The cooling system has been redesigned to minimise waste heat, and enhanced heat dissipation ensures stable measurements even at higher room temperatures.

Another standout feature is the device’s linearity in the defined measuring range from -1.5°C to 0°C, with a minimal linearity error of less than 0.001°C. This guarantees accurate readings, eliminating the need for extra calibration. Automatic calibration further streamlines the process, saving time and reducing the risk of errors by storing all settings and calibration values.

CryoStar’s user-friendly touch display enables real-time tracking of measurements and supports easy exporting of results via connections to printers and PCs. It also supports a variety of languages, ensuring compatibility with both national and international standards. With these improvements, CryoStar continues to set the standard for milk quality testing, making it an essential tool for farmers, dairies, and the food industry at large.
