SP Scientific Hosts a Range of Freeze-Drying / Lyopilization Offerings

Aug 04 2010

SP Scientific is excited to announce several initiatives and offerings available through their LyoTech Center, an online collaboration of webinars, course offerings, and technical briefs focused on the freeze-drying and lyophilization industry.

Upcoming sessions in the LyoLearn Webinars, a free online seminar series with topics of interest to lyophilization scientists and presented by industry experts, include the “Key Considerations for the Successful Lyophilization of Proteins” presented by Jeff Blue from Merck on August 26th and “Quality by Design in Formulation and Process Development for Freeze-Dried Parenterals” on September 15th presented by Lisa Hardwick and Dr. Steven Nail, both from Baxter Healthcare. These are only a few of the wide variety of topics covered in this monthly webinar offering. Past webinars have included: “Formulation Design to Support Lyophilization,” “Utilizing DSC for Thermal Analysis,” and “Process Analytical Technology Issues and Concerns.” Visitors to the LyoTech Center can view past series offerings through the archived webinars section of the site. There, users can download sessions directly to computers or mobile devices, and view webinars at their own pace.

In addition to the webinar series, SP Scientific will also host a hands-on training session titled “Lyophilization Cycle Development & Optimization” on October 26-28th which is ideal for research scientists in the freeze-drying industry. This three day course will be conducted by Dr. J. Jeff Schwegman from AB BioTechnologies with a guest lecture from Dr. Serguei Tchessalov from Pfizer. Participating partners include TA Instruments, McCrone, and Metrohm. This hands-on laboratory course will focus on following the freeze-drying process from formulation and thermal analysis to cycle development and optimization, packaging, and troubleshooting. Attendees will have the chance to optimize their learning experience by using tangible applications in a controlled setting. Space is limited, so advanced registration is required.

The LyoLearn Tech Briefs are articles and technical notes provided by SP Scientific associates and consultants to present fundamental freeze drying information. Tech Briefs include topics such as utilizing the differential between a capacitance manometer and pirani sensor to indicate the end of primary drying, the steps needed to take for good freeze drying maintenance, and case studies on lyophilization problems. For example, one of the more recent technical briefs is on the topic of “Freeze Drying of Co-Solvent Systems: Rationale, Opportunities and Applications.” SP Scientific is continually accepting requests for submissions from lyophilization industry experts, and will respond to such requests on a case-by-case basis.
