Olympus unveils a new era of industrial opto-digital microscopy

May 23 2012

Olympus has launched its new family of opto-digital microscopes, the DSX Series, which through a combination of advanced optics and electronics can provide a complete inspection system to meet the needs of applications across R&D and quality control. Consisting of the DSX100 free-angle wide zoom microscope, the DSX500 high resolution upright microscope and the DSX500i high resolution inverted microscope, the systems can be used by experts and beginners alike for inspection and analysis in areas such as the automotive industry, palaeontology, geology, PCB manufacture, fibre structure, micro-channels, metallography and the geometry of small parts.
With no microscope binoculars, samples can be visualised on-screen, with control via the intuitive touch-screen interface, or by using a more traditional computer mouse. As all three members of the DSX family operate in the same manner, operators can easily move from one model to another without the need for specific training.

Selectable modes range from tutorial to advanced user levels and the interface can be customised so that only the required functionality is visible for routine work. User profiles can also be set-up as specific protocols, enabling fast retrieval of data and information

The system will automatically generate a selection of preview images which are shown as thumbnails for each technique – brightfield, darkfield, differential interference contrast (DIC) –all the user needs to do is touch the screen to indicate their preferred imaging approach.

Combining functionality such as HDR (high dynamic range) with the advanced optics enables high resolution images to be obtained at the best size for each application. The new zoom optics are also said to reduce halation and glare to provide images of the best possible clarity.
