Night Blindness
Oct 25 2010
Xerophtalmia (dry eyes) and nyctalopia (night blindness) are symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency, in more serious cases eye lesions and an increased susceptibility to infections are common. While poor reproductive ability, loss of teeth enamel and misshaped bone formation may occur without correction. The improvement of diet and introduction of vitamin supplements have reduced such problems in the industrialised world but they are still prevalent in most third-world countries. The analysis of Vitamin A in foodstuffs, blood or serum samples can be carried out on a simple filter fluorimeter available
from Jenway. This rugged, low cost instrument is suitable for laboratory or field use, requires little maintenance and is very easy to use. Bibby Scientific - Jenway.
