Fast analysis of trace elements in biological matrices with the S2 PICOFOX

Jan 12 2010

The analysis of trace elements in biological matrices is of ever increasing importance. Bruker’s S2 PICOFOX total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometer is ideally suited for a wide range of applications in this area. It offers a number of advantages over established methods like atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). These methods require time-consuming sample preparation procedures including digestion with hazardous acids. The S2 PICOFOX in contrast requires little or no sample preparation. AAS and ICP-OES need larger sample amounts while the S2 PICOFOX analyzes requires little sample material only.

In vivo heavy metal tests of mammal tissues

TXRF requires minute amounts of tissue to perform e.g. organ specific multi-element analysis. In most cases no preparation is required or it is limited to a simple dilution step.

Trace element analysis in blood

Essential as well as toxic elements can be analyzed with the same accuracy as with AAS or ICP-OES. Applications include the monitoring of trace element metabolic interactions or the control of chemotherapeutical drugs containing metals like platinum.

Trace metals in cell and protein suspensions

TXRF can be used for rapid fingerprint analysis supporting the characterization of oxic and anoxic bacteria. Metal/sulphur ratios can be analyzed, requiring a sample amount of only 1 µl protein suspension.

Dietary supplements and phytoforensics

The S2 PICOFOX can be used to measure halogenide content of raw botanical substances, e.g. to determine bromine as an indicator for illegal fumigation. Metal splinter contamination can be analyzed to for detecting inadequate transport.

Further information on these applications and more can be found in a series of Lab reports:

1. Trace elements in biological matrices and their impact on clinical chemistry
2. Trace element analysis of blood samples
3. Analysis of mercury in tap water and orange juice

The lab reports can be found here.
