Improved Multielemental Analysis Using Specialised Sample Handling with the XSERIES 2 CCT-ICP-MS

Jun 10 2008

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has cemented its place in routine environmental and geological laboratories thanks to its wide elemental coverage, high sensitivity and rapid analysis. The spectroscopic interferences that are the main limitation of the ICP-MS technique have been largely solved in recent years through the introduction of collision and reaction cell (CCT) based instruments. The Thermo Scientific XSERIES 2 ICP-MS uses a powerful, universal (H2 in He) CCT gas mixture (licensed by Battelle) to eliminate polyatomic interferences in complex matrices without slowing down analysis speed.
Through the use of a segmented flow sample introduction system (Elemental Scientific’s FAST System), matrix deposition on the ICP-MS interface is significantly reduced leading to increased first time pass QC analyses and longer periods between necessary maintenance. By introducing methane gas into the ICP, sensitivity for poorly ionised elements such as Be, As and Se is improved by up to a factor of 5 leading to improved detection limits.
