Following the news of a Europe-wide grid connecting scientists in the UK with their counterparts in research facilities and educational institutions across the continent, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has outlined its own commitment to a similar project in south-east Europe.
SEE-GRID is a clustered means of accessing computing capabilities distributed over a wide geographical area for scientists in the region, to ensure that applications with a need for high processing power are able to access that processing ability.
The academy's own commitment to the initiative includes developing a portal to allow the usage of the attached resources to be accounted for, with new usage statistics uploaded automatically on a daily basis from all of the terminals or data centres on the network.
In all, 30 clusters are attached to SEE-GRID, accounting for 100 terabytes of storage capacity and some 3,000 central processing units which can be accessed and controlled via the portal.
