New DIN 51830-2 expands predictive grease testing with RapidOxy 100

10 Jul, 2025

The recent publication of DIN 51830-2 represents a major advancement in the evaluation of oxidation stability in greases. Currently under consideration for international adoption, the new method introduces important enhancements for more realistic simulation of grease applications and enables new approaches to service life estimation.

Anton Paar’s RapidOxy 100 allows laboratories to take immediate advantage of these developments and expand their testing capabilities in grease R&D and condition monitoring.

A compact, fully automated oxidation stability tester, the RapidOxy 100 is a powerful, intuitive tool for quickly determining the oxidation stability of greases according to the Rapid Small-Scale Oxidation Test (RSSOT) method used in ASTM D8206 and DIN 51830-1.

When performed with the RapidOxy 100, the advanced DIN 51830-2 method integrates catalytically active contact materials – such as steel and brass – to better simulate the surfaces greases encounter in actual applications.

It also introduces a new evaluation technique, oxidation induction time (OIT), which indicates the point at which antioxidants are fully depleted. The oxidation induction time (OIT) indicates the complete consumption of antioxidants in the grease, as shown in the pressure curve recorded during testing.

The combination of oxidation induction time (OIT) and activation energy derived from the Arrhenius equation forms the basis for determining grease service life under defined temperature conditions. This enables estimation of remaining useful life (RUL) for used greases using the DIN 51830-2 method.

Oxidation is a leading cause of grease failure, affecting both lubrication performance and shelf life. With DIN 51830-2, the RapidOxy 100 offers deeper insights into these degradation processes – supporting more informed decisions in product development and maintenance planning where reliability is critical.
