Imagine how many times a glass media bottle is touched and handled in the average lab during the working day. Research by the DURAN Group found that the larger GL 45 glass lab bottles with the blue caps can be difficult to grip and handle, especially by users who have smaller hands, wet hands or are wearing protective gloves. In addition, although the industry standard GL 45 thread is the common link between the glass bottle and cap, many users commented that it takes 'too long' to open or close the GL 45 caps.

In 2011, with these observations in mind, the DURAN Group started a new product development program. The result of this project is a new user friendly shape and function of the YOUTILITY bottles and screw cap.  The new glass bottles have two shaped grip zones that make handling the bottles more comfortable and safer. The top of the grip zones are specially shaped to prevent the bottle from slipping when wet. The new YOUTILITY cap features a reduced cross section for smaller hands and more comfortable grooves and ridges. The shape of the new YOUTILITY cap is an inverted cone shape to improve the grip if the cap is held from above, reducing the risk of the cap slipping out of the hand. A specially shortened thread was developed for use on both the YOUTILITY bottles and caps. The new thread is 30% faster to open or close, yet remains compatible with the GL 45 DIN standard and achieves the same high level of sealing security.

In recognition of the innovative products developed using a user-centric design process, the DURAN Group has been awarded both an iF design award and a Red Dot design award for the DURAN YOUTILITY Bottle System.
