Liquid handling
Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich, Germany, are using four Integra Biosciences PIPETBOY GENIUS serological pipet controllers to simplify and speed up their cell culture workflows. These ergonomic devices enable precise, high-speed serological pipetting, while the repeat dispense function makes routine tasks easier and less tiring for lab staff.
The Institute’s biochemistry department comprises around 35 team members, with approximately a third working in two cell culture labs handling a variety of mammalian and stem cell lines. To enhance liquid handling accuracy and efficiency, the department recently integrated four PIPETBOY GENIUS pipet controllers into daily workflows. Laboratory technician Albert Ries highlighted the advantages of the repeat dispense function, used in combination with Integra serological pipets:
“We really value the repeat dispense feature - it’s incredibly practical. With a single aspiration, we can quickly deliver multiple aliquots without manually reading the volume each time. Filling multiwell plates has never been faster or more accurate. Of all the pipetting tools I’ve used, the PIPETBOY GENIUS responds most sensitively to variations in finger pressure, giving us precise control over flow rates. This is crucial for protecting delicate cell monolayers, conserving expensive reagents, and preventing cross-contamination between wells.”
Ergonomics is equally important for Albert and his colleagues: “We spend long hours at the bench, so comfort and efficiency are essential to reduce both mental and physical fatigue. The PIPETBOY GENIUS is lightweight, yet packs all its advanced functions into a compact design. Integra’s engineers clearly spent time understanding the needs of cell culture labs, and the device has noticeably improved our workflow. It’s quickly become a favorite among our teams, and I would recommend it to anyone working in cell biology,” Albert added.
