Temperature Control: Vital for Viscosity Testing

The viscosity of substances, ranging from fluids to semi-solids, is affected by various factors including the substances’ molecular structure or the external force applied (shear stress). The flow behaviour of the substance can become either more or less viscous. An often neglected but crucial parameter is the temperature of the sample. Changing the sample temperature by ±1°C can result in a change in the viscosity of the specimen of up to ±10%. This strong temperature dependence of the sample makes accurate temperature control essential for every reliable viscosity measurement.

Anton Paar’s ViscoQC rotational viscometers have state-of-the-art temperature control which guarantees supremely accurate sample temperatures. The Peltier temperature devices PTD 80 and PTD 175 are air counter-cooled, meaning that a slow-performing, space-consuming and maintenance-intensive circulator thermostat is not required. Their broad temperature range from +15°C to +80°C (PTD 80) and -45°C to +175°C (PTD 175) enables viscosity testing at the most demanding temperatures. The PTDs are fully controlled via the ViscoQC display, for highly convenient measurement management.

A highlight is the unique T-ReadyTM function, which signals when the sample has reached the target temperature, to ensure top measurement repeatability. You also save time as temperature equilibration can be reached up to three times faster compared to common liquid circulator baths.
