MobileFuge is a remote control and monitoring application from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences for their Optima XPN and Avanti JXN centrifuges.  It allows scientists to monitor up to 16 instruments from anywhere they have an internet connection and either an Apple iOS or Android device.

Recently launched in the US, the app is now being made available globally and has already attracted more than 1000 downloads. Once Optima XPN and Avanti JXN Series instruments are configured so that they are always connected to the lab’s IT network, monitoring multiple instruments becomes easy, as demonstrated by this Beckman Coulter centrifugation video.  Scientists can then access instrument data, so they can carry out remote monitoring and control and error handling via the central network.

Currently, Beckman Coulter is the only centrifuge company which offers this level of network connectivity.  As Randy Pawlovich, Director of Product Management, Centrifugation and Tools explained: “We have tapped into the potential of mobile technology to provide customers with a new and more efficient way of working.

“MobileFuge extends certain vital functions of the lab to wherever researchers are based, and in whatever time zone. Designed specifically for our Optima XPN and Avanti JXN centrifuges, it enables researchers not only to remotely monitor their instruments but to have basic control over them.”

MobileFuge’s ability to communicate with a research lab’s central network makes it especially suitable for shared lab environments.  “The new app frees up users so they can focus on other aspects of their research and meeting deadlines,” added Mr Pawlovich.

In addition, its email diagnostic alerts feature provides additional workflow support for production or cGMP environments.  Scientists can receive an immediate electronic notification if there is an issue with the instrument during a run (for example, a power outage).  They can then take remedial action, regardless of their location.  The app also enables users to monitor diagnostic information and to monitor and modify speed, run time and temperature.
