Natural refrigerant cooling for general purpose centrifuges

04 Aug, 2026

Thermo Fisher Scientific has expanded its centrifuge portfolio with the introduction of the Thermo Scientific™ X2 and S2 Series General Purpose Centrifuges, bringing natural refrigerant cooling technology to smaller-capacity systems for medical research, biopharma and clinical laboratories.

Offering capacities of up to 1.6 litres per run, the new models combine a compact footprint with the performance, safety and ergonomic features found in the larger X4 and S4 Series. The systems are designed to support a wide range of laboratory workflows where reliable sample separation and efficient use of space are essential.

With the launch of the X2 and S2 Series, Thermo Fisher Scientific says it is the first manufacturer to offer a complete portfolio of refrigerated centrifuges using natural refrigerants. Incorporating Thermo Scientific™ GreenCool™ Technology, the systems use a refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just three, helping laboratories reduce environmental impact while complying with current European and US F-gas regulations. The centrifuges are also more energy efficient than previous models and are manufactured at a certified zero-waste facility powered entirely by renewable electricity.

Designed for versatility, the X2 and S2 Series are available in both refrigerated and ventilated configurations, with general laboratory and IVD/medical device versions to suit different applications. Users can choose from a wide selection of fixed-angle and swinging-bucket rotors, including Thermo Scientific™ Fiberlite™ carbon fibre options, enabling the systems to support applications ranging from cell culture and molecular biology to clinical diagnostics, cell and gene therapy, bioproduction and quality control.

The centrifuges also incorporate features to simplify day-to-day operation. Thermo Scientific™ Auto-Lock™ Rotor Exchange allows rotor changes in less than three seconds, while ClickSeal™ biocontainment lids enable secure one-handed operation. Together with enhanced temperature control and an extended refrigerated operating range down to -20°C, the new systems are designed to improve productivity while supporting more sustainable laboratory workflows.
