Automating SBSE workflow

28 Jul, 2026

High-capacity enrichment. Solvent-free extraction. Reduced matrix load. Compatibility with GC-MS and LC-MS workflows. That is the appeal of 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗦𝗕𝗦𝗘).

A phase-coated magnetic stir bar is placed into the sample (or exposed to the sample headspace), and the analytes are enriched into its sorptive phase during extraction.

Once the extraction is complete, the analytes can be released for analysis by thermal desorption or solvent back-extraction.

Historically, however, one of the practical challenges with SBSE has been the manual handling of the workflow. That is where 𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗟 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗧𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 comes in. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗧𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿® brings SBSE directly onto the 𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗟 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗿 (𝗠𝗣𝗦), providing a fully automated end-to-end workflow.

So, what changed? Da Vinci Laboratory Solutions UK & Ireland Ltd, the UK partner of GERSTEL, outlines the implementations in an infographic. AutoTwister® does not change the SBSE principle, it removes the manual friction.
