Chromatography
Enrichment for volatile organic samples is a mature technology. Laboratories wanting to look deeper and to gain more insights into their samples, whether they are testing food and beverages, fragrances, environmental or biological samples, delved into techniques like solid-phase microextraction (SPME), headspace-trap, dynamic headspace or in-tube extraction (ITEX).These have grown in complexity and utility over decades, and remain powerful analytical tools.
However, they all have drawbacks. Inherent bias is common, as are issues with reliability and ruggedness – the ability to cope with small changes in sample or system. Enter the latest development in headspace extraction: Vacuum In-Tube Extraction (V-ITEX).
V-ITEX uses a vacuum to accelerate extraction of volatiles from your chosen matrix, making it possible at lower temperatures while greatly reducing bias toward lower boiling point compounds. There are few moving parts in the system – it connects directly to the carrier gas of the GC and provides reliability for thousands of injections.
The outcome is a technique that proves more reliable than even a well configured SPME system, whilst greatly improving data quality – and providing more insights into samples.
