Extended-range MALS detector for faster large molecule characterisation

27 Jun, 2026

Waters Corporation has launched the omniDAWN™ Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS) Photometer, part of its Wyatt Technology portfolio, introducing an extended-range detector for UHPLC and UPLC workflows.

The system delivers absolute molar mass and size measurements with 18-angle detection, enabling rapid characterisation of large and complex molecules without relying on column calibration standards.

It enables up to four-times faster chromatographic run times, supporting faster decision-making across discovery, development and quality control workflows. It also extends UPLC-compatible sizing up to ten times, allowing analysis of analytes ranging from protein aggregates and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) to viral vectors and lipid nanoparticles (LNPs).

By providing absolute molar mass and size data in a single run, the system reduces sample consumption by 30–50% and solvent use by approximately 40%, while improving efficiency and throughput. Its low-dispersion design preserves resolution and sensitivity, enabling clearer separation of monomers, aggregates and fragments.

The omniDAWN Photometer integrates with Waters UHPLC and UPLC systems and is powered by ASTRA™ software, which combines multi-angle light scattering with UV and refractive index detection for analysis of size, composition and heterogeneity. The software includes dedicated workflows for ADCs, LNPs and viral vectors and is compliant with regulatory standards including 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11.
