Understanding the role of eluent in ion chromatography

07 Feb, 2026

Choosing the right eluent is essential for high-performance ion chromatography (IC). In IC, the eluent works in tandem with the column and analytes to achieve accurate separation. This is referred to as the ‘triangle of dependency’, where eluent is the most flexible yet crucial variable in method optimisation.

The choice of eluent goes beyond ion type; reagent purity, ultrapure water, and protection from ambient CO₂ are essential for reproducible results. Furthermore, you can optimise retention times and peak shapes by looking at the pH, buffer strength, and temperature of the eluent concentration.

By using an automated eluent generation system in a high-throughput lab, you can easily improve consistency and reduce manual error as this system ensures high purity, and reproducible separations.

In conclusion, the eluent isn't a transport medium, but a key for precision, and flexibility in IC analyses.
