Strategic acquisition strengthens fibre optics capabilities

14 May, 2025

The Photona Group has expanded its fibre optics footprint by acquiring FOC&T GmbH, a specialist in medical-grade fibre assemblies based in Burghausen, Germany. As the parent company of Laser Components, Photona is aiming to strengthen its position across industrial, aerospace, and medical sectors through the move.

The two companies bring complementary strengths to the table: Laser Components has long been a key supplier of fibre solutions for demanding environments, while FOC&T brings decades of precision engineering expertise in fibre connectors and cable assembly for the healthcare sector.

FOC&T’s entire team will remain in place, with leadership shifting to Dr Lars Mechold, currently Technical Director at Laser Components Germany. Founder Anton Pautz is stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities but will stay on in an advisory role to ensure a smooth handover.

“This is a natural fit,” said Dr Florian Blobner, Chief Product Officer at the Photona Group. “We’re combining strengths in engineering and application-specific design to unlock new markets and capabilities.”

With fibre technology playing a growing role in precision sensing, diagnostics, and high-performance connectivity, the expanded expertise puts the group in a strong position to capitalise on growing demand.
