Cryogenically cooled MCT detectors for FTIR analysis

07 Apr, 2026

Laser Components has expanded its infrared detection portfolio with cryogenically cooled mercury cadmium telluride (MCT, HgCdTe) detectors from Vigo Photonics, strengthening capabilities for high-sensitivity FTIR spectroscopy in the long-wave infrared range.

Designed for demanding analytical applications, the nitrogen-cooled detectors operate at 77 Kelvin, enabling highly precise measurements at wavelengths beyond 20 μm. This level of sensitivity is essential for detecting weak infrared signals that would otherwise be lost in thermal noise, particularly in advanced spectroscopy and trace gas analysis.

The technology is well suited to applications across scientific research, environmental monitoring, industrial process control, and gas analysis, where accurate detection of low-intensity IR absorption features is critical.

Available in both Dewar assemblies and compact flatpack housings, the detectors can be integrated into a wide range of FTIR systems. Large active areas, anti-reflection coatings, and anti-fringing optimisation help to ensure stable, low-noise signal performance even under challenging measurement conditions.

By operating at cryogenic temperatures, the MCT sensors significantly reduce thermal background noise, improving signal-to-noise ratios and enabling reliable detection of subtle spectral features in complex samples.
