Screening and quality control of palm oil with NIR spectroscopy

Palm oil is an edible oil from the fruit of oil palm trees and can either be produced into palm kernel oil or red palm oil. It found in more than 50% of prepackaged consumer goods – from pizza to deodorant. Currently, plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia supply over 85% of palm oil used all over the world. 

Screening and quality control are critical in ensuring that certain specifications are met for palm oil use in several industries. One simple way to do this is with near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. NIR spectroscopy is not only useful for quality control during production, but also for companies that procure palm oil and need to assess it quality before using it in other products. The two major advantages for using NIR spectroscopy when dealing with palm oil is the simplicity regarding the sample measurement and the speed at which it can be done.
