High-frequency EIS: A powerful tool for the future of mobility

The market for electric vehicles (EVs) is growing rapidly and, as they're becoming more mainstream, developments in battery technology will be critical in supporting the energy storage needed.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are currently considered a great alternative to Li-ion batteries and could help advance the large-scale adoption of EVs by providing higher energy density using a solid electrolyte material rather than a flammable liquid electrolyte. The inherent toughness of solid electrolytes helps improve safety compared to Li-ion batteries by reducing the risk of short circuits. Additionally, solid electrolytes are both chemically and thermally more stable than liquid electrolytes, reducing degradation and dendrite formation over time.

Whilst the electrochemical characterisation of SSBs can be difficult, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at high frequencies, rapid processes can be captured easily.
