Quality control of CBD oils

09 Feb, 2026

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is made by extracting the compound from the plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil and it's just one of over 100 chemical compounds found in cannabis. Unlike THC, CBD isn't psychoactive, which makes it an appealing option for those looking for pain relief without mind-altering effects.

When analysing CBD oil, the standard HPLC method requires 45 minutes to perform by trained analysts. In contrast, Vis-NIR spectroscopy an efficient alternative due to its cost-efficiency and fast non-destructive analysis that can determine the cannabinoid content in oils.

In this application note, from Metrohm, samples of CBD carrier oils (including hemp, fish, and MCT oil) were analysed. The results showed a very high correlation between Vis-NIR predictions and reference methods, demonstrating robustness suitable for routine testing and thus makes NIR spectroscopy a practical choice for many laboratories.
