Anton Paar introduces world’s first mercury-free intrusion porosimetry method

20 Jul, 2026

It’s another first for Anton Paar: mercury-free porosimetry that equals the pore size range, resolution, and data quality of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP).

The eGaIn Filling Station accessory for the PoreMaster porosimeter uses eutectic gallium-indium alloy (eGaIn), a non-toxic and environmentally safe liquid metal, as an intrusion medium.

Available exclusively through Anton Paar, eGaIn intrusion porosimetry is the only high-performance alternative to mercury that aligns with emerging safety and environmental standards.

“We’re excited to introduce this major step forward in pore analysis,” says Dr. Alyssa Henderson, Product Manager at Anton Paar. “As a high-performance alternative to traditional porosimetry, eGaIn enables safer, more flexible lab work without compromising on results.

“We hope it encourages laboratories to join us in leading the shift to a mercury-free future.”

Because eGaIn is safe to handle and requires no special infrastructure or hazardous material protocols, it can be used in any standard laboratory.

eGaIn also comes with a key bonus: it’s reusable, and the system is designed to make the process straightforward.

The filling station is an optional upgrade for Anton Paar’s PoreMaster porosimeter, giving laboratories the freedom to adopt mercury-free porosimetry at their own pace. Users can run eGaIn- and mercury-based measurements in parallel, allowing them to compare results from both media without changing their existing workflows.
