The Application of Customer-centric Pump Solutions within Life Sciences

Two application examples typify the expertise of Premier Control Technologies (PCT) within the Life Science industry. The first example is the need for precise, repeatable and gentle fluid transfer as seen within liquid filling machines. The second example typifies the need for sample integrity within fluid transfer of medical samples (such as blood, tissue, or urine) for In Vitro Diagnostics.

Liquid filling machines operate at different pressure regimes, they can be linear or rotary and can be single- or multi-head. A pump solution must be specific to the given requirements at hand, not a standard offering shoe-horned in for the convenience of the supplier. Care therefore needs to be taken to fulfil the requirements of: the variability of the filling volume; the requirement for high or ultra-high filling accuracy; consideration of filling efficiency; the level of fluid integrity (contamination assessment); potential for particulates; consideration of shear-sensitive substances; consideration of breakoff to eliminate over-run and droplet formation.

IVD devices do not act directly on a patient to produce results as they rely upon the later introduction of samples. Inaccurate test results could lead to mismanagement of a patients’ disease or condition, or the treatment of a disease or condition that is not there. For accuracy, reliability and effectiveness the sampling system must be highly accurate, free from contamination and be highly reliable. The clean-down system needs to be equally reliable to prevent cross-contamination.
