QED Environmental Systems has introduced the Huberg SEM5000, a lightweight portable methane detector designed for rapid landfill emissions monitoring in the field.
The new instrument extends QED’s Huberg gas analysis portfolio and uses laser-based tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) to deliver highly sensitive measurements down to 1 ppm, with no cross-sensitivity to other gases. Its sub-2-second response time allows operators to quickly locate and map methane leaks during walkover surveys, supporting applications such as landfill surface emissions checks, wellhead inspections, and hotspot detection.
Engineered for demanding field conditions, the SEM5000 features a rugged IP65/NEMA 4-rated housing and weighs just 2.9 lbs, making it suitable for single-operator use. It powers up in under a minute and includes a swappable battery providing up to 10 hours of continuous operation, reducing downtime during extended surveys. The device is also ATEX Zone 1 certified, enabling safe use in hazardous environments across a temperature range of -25°C to 50°C.
Connectivity is integrated through GPS and Bluetooth, with QED’s SEMSoft platform enabling seamless data transfer to mobile devices and PCs for reporting and compliance workflows. Data handling is further supported by automated reporting tools designed to simplify regulatory documentation.
The SEM5000 can operate for up to two years between factory calibrations, managed through QED’s Express servicing programme, which offers fixed-cost servicing, rapid turnaround, and return freight included.
