Five key design features for high-performance turbine flow meters

08 Jan, 2025

In the second part of their turbine series, Titan Enterprises highlights the five critical design features of Pelton wheel turbine flowmeters, focusing on key elements for creating a cost-efficient and reliable product.

Pelton wheel turbine flowmeters are designed to provide excellent linearity and repeatability, essential for accurate measurement. One subtle but important aspect of the design is the radial clearance of the turbine within its housing. Too small a clearance causes drag, affecting linearity, while too large a clearance leads to undesirable gas entrainment and excessive chamber volume. Titan addresses this by using a hexagonal chamber that generates vortices, minimising drag and maintaining linearity even as fluid velocities become laminar.

The second key feature is the flowmeter’s long operational life. Bearings are critical in this respect, as they must withstand the wear caused by water-based fluids and aggressive chemicals. Titan uses sapphire or ruby bearings, ensuring durability even in demanding applications like medical equipment, where flowmeters may need to function for several years. This careful choice of materials helps maintain low friction and consistent performance over time.

In-line meter connections are another important design consideration. Titan’s solution places the inlet and outlet opposite each other, a configuration that minimises pressure drop and simplifies installation. This design also eliminates the need for more complex arrangements that can increase fluid volume and complicate bearing placement, making it both cost-effective and easier for customers to install.

Good chemical resistance is crucial, especially for applications in food or medical industries. Titan uses NSF-approved PVDF for most of their turbines, which ensures they can withstand even the most corrosive environments. Additionally, magnets used for detection are overmoulded to protect them from aggressive chemicals, further extending the flowmeter's life.

Finally, Titan’s focus on ease of manufacture ensures that their turbine flowmeters are cost-effective and reliable. The design incorporates modern moulding and machining technologies that simplify production and ensure consistent quality, while also allowing for easy interchangeability of components.

In summary, Titan’s Pelton wheel turbine flowmeters provide a versatile, durable, and cost-effective solution for low-flow measurement across a range of industries. When selecting a flowmeter, Titan recommends ensuring that the device meets the specific needs of the application, including flow range, pressure, temperature, and chemical resistance.
