Clinical Researcher Celebrates Achievements at Innovation Awards

During the 2018 North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards, held on March 8 in Preston, Dr Ahmed Al-Naher from the Institute of Translational Medicine was named Research Student of the Year. The awards celebrate success and rewards achievements for work being undertaken across the region in relation to clinical research and innovation that impact and improve patient care.

Ahmed won the award for his PhD work to develop personalised kidney function monitoring guidelines, based on the clinical symptoms of individual patients with heart failure. He was also recognised for coordinating working partnerships with patients, NHS services and industry to collaborate within the project.

The Clinical Research Fellow and 3rd year PhD student was nominated for the prize by his supervisor, Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed.

Commenting on his win, Ahmed said: “I am thrilled and honoured to have received this award. My hope is that this achievement can help raise awareness for the work we are doing to help patients across the UK with heart failure and raise support for the people who need it most.”

Mark Gabbay, Professor of General Practice and Head Of Department of Health Service Research at University of Liverpool & Director of CLAHRC NWC, said: “I am particularly pleased to see some of the researchers of the future being recognised here tonight and their excellent projects in tackling health inequalities. Ahmed is a well-deserved winner.”

The award winners were announced at a ceremony held at Preston North End Football Club on 8 March 2018.

The awards are a collaboration between the Innovation Agency (AHSN for the North West Coast), the NIHR Clinical Research Network North West Coast (CRN NWC); and NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care North West Coast (CLAHRC NWC).
