The new Köttermann VarioProtect safety cabinet represents a revolutionary step forward in laboratory safety and efficiency. For the first time, laboratories can now store a range of hazardous substances — including flammable, corrosive, and toxic chemicals — together in a single, purpose‐designed cabinet. This breakthrough solution does not simply consolidate storage; it fundamentally changes the approach to safety management in modern laboratories by maximising space, optimising resource consumption, and ultimately reducing operating costs.

Traditionally, different types of hazardous chemicals required separate storage systems. This often led to under-utilised safety cabinets, excessive use of space, and increased exhaust air requirements. The VarioProtect directly addresses these issues by offering an all-in-one storage solution.

Space is a constant issue in laboratories, challenging both laboratory planners and staff. The space-efficient design and high storage capacity of the VarioProtect ensure optimal use of valuable laboratory space, without compromising safety. Previously, multiple types of safety cabinets were needed – often only partially filled – resulting in wasted space. With its innovative design, laboratories can eliminate the need for multiple cabinets, thereby freeing up valuable floor space. With a construction depth comparable to that of fume cupboards, the VarioProtect can be conveniently positioned next to them, allowing the available space to be optimally utilised with a single safety cabinet.

The new safety cabinet not only saves valuable laboratory space, but also reduces costs and conserves resources. By combining the storage of flammable and corrosive hazardous substances, laboratories can replace up to three cabinets with a single unit. This means only one exhaust air connection is needed, cutting energy consumption. Consolidating three cabinets into one can save approximately €400 (approx. £350) in energy costs per year.

Innovatively safe: The integrated air system has been effectively adapted to the different properties of hazardous substances. Fresh ambient air is continuously channelled into the VarioProtect and used air is safely extracted. The exhaust air duct - mounted centrally on the rear wall - ensures uniform extraction at every storage level.

The VarioProtect's construction features highly durable materials, allowing for the safe storage of even aggressive chemicals using corrosion-resistant, resilient plastics. Effective extraction thanks to the innovative cabinet design directly removes flammable gases so that the laboratory air always remains clean and safe when the cabinet is opened. With certification to DIN EN 14470-1 Type 90, DIN EN 16121/16122 and GS, the VarioProtect fulfils the highest safety standards. In the event of a fire, type 90 means that laboratory staff are protected from the stored chemicals for at least 90 minutes.

Thanks to its double vertical pull-out drawers, the cabinet offers practical, ergonomic access to stored substances, which are clearly organised and easy to reach – right where they’re needed. For toxic substances, the VarioProtect also offers a version with a lockable poison compartment, providing additional safety. The removable polypropylene shelves are practical for cleaning, as they can be cleaned quickly and easily.

From the perspective of sustainable laboratory design, the VarioProtect stands out as a holistic solution. It reduces the need for infrastructure, minimises operational emissions, and promotes a safer workplace environment. Its all-in-one approach reflects the growing demand for lab equipment that is not just functional and compliant, but forward-thinking in environmental terms. The new safety cabinet sets a new benchmark in the safe and efficient storage of chemicals, delivering an ideal balance of safety, ergonomics, sustainability and space efficiency.
